The Cunard liner Lusitania, carrying 1,918 passangers and crew, was
hit by a torpedo fired from a German U-boat at 2.00 p.m. on the afternoon of May, 7th., 1915. 764 people survived the sinking which took place10 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale. A total of 169 of the 289 bodies recovered from the Lusitania were buried at the Old Church (Clonmel) Cemetery in Cobh (Queenstown).
