Cork Ladies Sport Stars launches 5K Run/Walk for Anchor Treatment Centre

Cork's All Ireland Camogie Champion Anna Geary and International Rugby Star Heather O' Brien will be on hand this evening to launch the 5K Ghostbuster run/walk in aid of the Anchor Treatment Centre, Mallow.

The run/walk which will take place in Doneraile Park on Saturday 1st November is a major fundraising event to assist the centre continue its work in helping those with addiction.

The Anchor Treatment Centre was established in 1995 by the Sisters of Mercy responding to the needs of the people for a community based Alcohol and Drug Counselling Service and a support network for families. The Centre provides a variety of services to families and individuals affected by alcohol, drug, food, gambling, sexual and other addictions.

Barry Golden, Chairperson of the Anchor Treatment Centre said "The Ghostbusters 5K run/walk is a fundraising event where children, their siblings and parents are asked to actively support those individuals and families so affected by the experience of addiction. The emphasis on the day is on having fun and continuing the Halloween celebrations by making this a fancy dress event, though not compulsory. There will be lots of prizes on the day for those in fancy dress so I would encourage everyone to come out and enjoy this event".

Sr. Miriam O' Connell, CEO of the Anchor Treatment Centre said "Our clients and family members who seek help at Anchor come from all walks of life across the greater North Cork community. We offer a range of programmes in order to assist our clients back to recovery and fundraising, such as the Ghostbusters 5K will enable us to provide these services to our clients at a reduced rate. Our programmes include group and individual counselling and our free complimentary therapy programme".

Sr. Miriam O' Connell added "Unfortunately some children are exposed to alcohol and drug misuse from a very young age at home or in their community. Ed
