ActionAid Ireland Graduation Ceremony for participants of the AFTER Project Empowerment Paths Programme. The event took place on 9th February 2018 at Nano Nagle Place, Douglas Street, Cork. Around 80 graduates from three direct provision centres in Co. Cork who completed a 12 week programme to develop their understanding and awareness of FGM and the need to reject this harmful practice. On the day we will have interviews available with visiting three visiting Guests from Liberia who can discuss the fight for FGM in Liberia; with Dr Caroline Munyi, who has been coordinating the project in Cork. I can also arrange interviews with some participants who will be graduating from the programme. The Graduation Ceremony is the exciting culmination of ActionAid’s AFTER (Against Female Genital Mutilation / Cutting Through Empowerment and Rejection) project, an EU-funded programme which seeks to eliminate the practice of FGM/C among migrant communities in Ireland. We have been carrying out community-based work in Cork in the direct provision centres, using the successful approaches used by ActionAid in Africa to help communities abandon or reject harmful cultural practices such as FGM/C and child marriage. Operation Illustration to transform Cork Primary School
Top artists will completely redecorate Gaelscoil Mhainistir Na Corann in just two days!
Today (Friday 9 February 2018) Laureate na Óg, PJ Lynch will be joined by a team of Ireland’s top children’s illustrators to kick off a weekend of mural making on the walls of Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann in Midleton, County Cork.
This adventure in mural making is part of PJ Lynch’s Laureate na nÓg Big Picture Project.
The artists will transform the interior walls of the school over the weekend and by the time the school reopens on Monday 12 February, it will be a veritable art gallery – featuring beautiful artworks in a variety of styles and vibrant colours.
The artworks will be inspired by the school’s 503 pupils who will today (Friday 9 February) take part in a series of technicolour Monster Doodles with the artists, during which each and every child will draw a picture on giant rolls of paper laid out in the school hall.
On Saturday and Sunday (10/11 February) the team of artists will be hard at work in the school, painting, sketching, doodling and stencilling the school’s walls.
On Monday (12 February) the school will re-open and the staff and pupils will see for the first time the complete transformation of their school.
The artists joining PJ Lynch for this Big Picture Project are Niamh Sharkey, Chris Judge, Lauren O’Neill, Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick and Michael Emberley.
Speaking ahead of the Midleton Big Picture Project, Laureate na nÓg PJ Lynch said:
“What a joy it is for me as Laureate to bring all these great illustrators together in one place, and for one weekend only. Full credit to Niamh, Chris, Lauren, Marie-Louise and Michael for embracing the challenge of transforming the school in just a weekend. The pupils and staff at Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann are full of passion and great ideas, so I know it’s going to be a brilliant, colourful weekend, and we will leave them with a permanent art collection that they can enjoy every day of their school lives.”
Principal of Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann Mairéad Ui Fhloinn said:
“We are privileged to have some wonderful artists visiting our school, working with the children and leaving us with our very own art collection which will act as an inspiration to both teachers and pupils long into the future. We would like to thank all who were involved in bringing the Big Picture Project to Gaelscoil Mhainistir na Corann and cannot wait to see the finished works which will reflect the wonderful spirit which permeates our school community.

07/02/2018. Rescue Heroes....Simon Hoffmann, Newcastle, Australia and Santiago Alegre, from Barcelona were guests of Lord Mayor Cllr Tony Fitzgerald to honour their rescue efforts last year of Cork sailor Johnny Durcan who was resusitated after drowning during a sailing race in California. Johnny's parents Tom and Yvonne Durcan, from Crosshaven are included in the pic at The Lord Mayor's Chamber at City Hall.
Pic; Larry Cummins.
(ORIGINAL STORY....Royal Cork's top youth sailor Johnny Durcan has been involved in a serious incident competing at the 29er world championships where he was trapped under his skiff dinghy during a capsize. The top Laser sailor is recovering in hospital in Los Angeles after he ended up 'getting stuck beneath the water'.
Durcan has described the 'hectic end' to the championships on social media and relates how, after his '[trapeze] harness was caught, it led to 'drowning and total respiratory failure i.e. 'I stopped breathing and passed out'.
The Cork Harbour ace was one of two Irish 29ers competing at Long Beach, California, the other boat sailed by his twin brother Harry and Harry Whitaker, also of Royal Cork Yacht Club.

Durcan admits 'things were looking quite bad because I was under the water, unconscious for a while but thanks to the many sailors on the course who jumped out to help, I'm still here and kicking'.

It is understood, his 11–year–old helm Lola Kohl, from Christiansted, St Croix in the USA, raised the alarm and fellow competitors and coaches rushed to Durcan's assistance.

CPR was performed on the Irish youth champion. He was rushed ashore from the race course and an ambulance brought him to hospital immediately.

'My fellow competitors helped save me. And that's something that makes sailing the sport it is.' the Cork youth declared on Facebook, posting this photograph below from his hospital bed.

Parent's Yvonne and Tom Durcan were one of the first to post a comment online in response: 'One seriously relieved Mom and Dad xxxxxx' )
