Dr Michael Murphy, President of UCC greeted those present and told them of the exciting year ahead at UCC which marks the bicentenary of the birth of George Boole, described as the “father of the information age”. Dr Murphy told guests about UCC’s plans to host an extensive programme of events and conferences for schools, academics and for the public throughout the year.

Pictured at the launch of Glow, A Cork Christmas Celebration at Bishop Lucey Park in Cork City are Cliona McSweeney, Rebecca, John Paul and Luca Carroll from Ballincollig. The festival has something for everyone from a 30m Ferris Wheel with panoramic views over Cork City, to a vintage carousel, a range of food and crafts markets, and live entertainment. The highlight of the event is the transformation of Bishop Lucey Park into a magical Victorian themed life-size pop-up book of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’. The park has been decked out with seasonal decorations and lights showcasing stunning scenes and live characters from the story. Guests will be met by a host of colourful characters including Melody Patience (the Choir Mistress), Jimmy Sweeper (The Chimney Sweep), and Hugo & Hetty Gossip. The park, which is free to visit, opens from 4pm-8pm every Friday to Sunday for the duration of the festival, which runs until 21st December. A glowing Cork welcome awaits you.
