New UCC collaboration with Cork company Velopi targets project managers

COPY/
In today’s business environment, organisations have to adapt and evolve continually in order to survive. Because change is effected through projects, project management has become a vital core competency for any organisation aiming to compete.

Adult Continuing Education (ACE) and the School of Management and Marketing at University College Cork (UCC) in collaboration with Velopi Project Management, a Cork-based Irish owned, Project Management Institute (PMI)-registered training and consultancy company, have recently announced the launch of a new range of part-time postgraduate project management programmes (NFQ level 9) which will be delivered in UCC from September 2016.

The UCC suite of part-time project management courses is designed for busy project management practitioners and offers various exit points. Successfully completing one year of the course, for example, entitles the student to a Postgraduate Certificate; completing two years leads to a Postgraduate Diploma and, finally, completing the thesis component leads to a Level 9 Master’s degree. The second year of the course also includes Project Management Professional (PMP)® exam preparation, thereby providing the student with both academic and professional accreditations.

Dr. David McKevitt, Academic Director of UCC’s Project Management programmes, sums up the philosophy behind these courses: “Central to the design of the modules is the fact that a project manager needs to balance the technical with the people dimensions of projects. The individual that hides in their office managing projects by email are simply not equipped to deal with the political and human dynamics of contemporary projects”.

Seamus Collins, Velopi’s CEO, concurs. “Being able to bring a project in on time and within budget is no longer sufficient. If you intend to have a successful career in this area and add real value to your company, you need to become aware of the organisation’s strategy and appreciate how individual projects contribute. You will also need to understand how to deliver that strategy via programmes and manage the associated change.”

UCC’s programmes reflect the growing need for Project Managers worldwide. Most organisations are increasingly embracing project management processes—and striving to ensure their staff are trained in them.
